Public Event Communications

VECTOR provides communications support for community events such as parades and charity runs held within the City of Vancouver. This provides our volunteer Amateur Radio operators with training and practical experience for emergency communications while operating in the field under various conditions. If you would like communications support for your charitable or community event in the City of Vancouver, VECTOR contact information is provided at the bottom of this page.

Celebration of Light

There was a Celebration of Light fireworks festival activation of the City of Vancouver Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) again this past year. This was a precautionary move and occurs each year for the four nights of the July-August event. It provides a valuable platform from which to monitor the largest public event held on the Canadian West Coast.

By activating the EOC, all the emergency services and other partners are able to respond instantly to any unplanned occurrence or to provide logistics needs. It also provides an opportunity to train staff in a realistic scenario without the pressures of an actual emergency.

As a partner in the EOC, VECTOR was asked to provide Amateur Radio support. To provide this service, VECTOR staffs the Amateur Radio room at E-Comm with a minimum of 2 radio amateurs per evening. The site Command Post at English Bay has an additional Net Control Operator and a Medical Channel liaison and there are typically 20 radio amateurs assigned to positions around the event sites.

Other Events

In addition to the above, VECTOR has also provided communications for the following:
  • The Canadian Association of Police Chiefs (CACP) Annual Conference (2004)
  • The International Olympic Evaluation Committee visit to Vancouver (2003)
  • The Visit of the US Navy Hospital Ship Mercy (2003)
  • The Mountain Express Run  For The Cure (Annual)
  • The Pacific Spirit Run (2005)
  • The Illuminaires Festival (Annual)
